Shall I Introduce Myself?

Hi! My name is Erika. I am a native Californian having been born, raised and lived here all of my life so far. I am a full time student at RCC and I must admit I love school, I love everything about it. I am a person who enjoys learning new things and taking in knowledge, I have made it a goal to take a great variety of classes during my time here. What is my career of choice? I always thought I would be a journalist one day, I imagined myself in distant places around the globe on assignments. But life has a way of changing things and so I have been in accounting for many years now. Recently I found myself at a fork in the road and I then decided it was time to reroute my path. I reentered school and chose to follow my heart.  I decided against journalism because of the responsibilities I have, instead I will be going with my second favorite choice. I will be teaching high school English. I look forward to my time in the classroom not just here in the States but also abroad. I hope that in the future I can live in other places around the world. This semester I am taking Environmental Science because it is a class that really drew my interest. Our planet is a magnificent creation; everything about it can leave us in awe. I feel that this class will help me understand our planet better. That it will teach me how I can be a more responsible person and in return I can teach my children.

"Momma can we please keep it?!"
In my daily life I am always quite busy. I am a single parent of two wonderful children, Gabriel and Catherine. These two along with our two dogs keep me on my toes. We enjoy the outdoors; one of our favorite places is Yosemite. The kids especially are always outside in search of bugs, birds or frogs they can spy on. Sitting under the warm sun reading a good book is an afternoon I would consider delightful. I am also very fond of traveling. Every year my sister and I take a vacation together, and I have had the pleasure of visiting some amazing places around the world. I hope that one day I can say that I have visited several locations of all seven continents.

I took the ecological footprint quiz found at www.footprintnetwork.org/calculator and boy was I surprised with my results.  I try to be ecofriendly. I recycle, I carpool, don’t use very much electricity; I hardly consume meat products, though I must admit I drive a big car. Nevertheless, I was sure I would receive very good results. Well I it turns out that if everyone on the planet had the exact same habits as I, we would need FOUR planets in order to survive.  This was quite shocking to me and I was glad I took the quiz because I now know that I need to work a little harder in order to make a difference.

I am starting this blog as part of an assignment for my Environmental Science class and though at first I had some reservations about it I think I might have been wrong, I just might enjoy it.
